People keep thinking sending a message helps. Try phoning the grocery store and yelling the price of milk is too high. Go in the store later and check to see if the price dropped. It didn't, did it? The message that the price is too high is meaningless. The only message that matters is the one sent by the actual reduction in consumption. Even if it doesn't bring the price down, it keeps a little more money in one's pocket. Sounds like a worthwhile effort to me.

No wonder we are paying so much at the pump! If you think boycotting is a ineffective idea, then, what? Maybe there are other ways to send a message.

Hubby just spent $87 on gas and will spend about that much again later this evening.
Sorry if this ruins your boycott, but he needs to work.

Does a protest without supporting documentation to your local gas station REALLY have an effect on Big Oil?

First of all, we are a global economy. So, you boycott ALL. Are we afraid of them? Or, do we think that we are so smart that we already figured out the outcome? Then, why boycott or protest anything! Is this an injustice or not? Special interest groups boycott and protest, almost everyday. Yes, one person can make a difference and a group can send a message loud and clear.

Thanks. It's looking like I might be due for a fill-up tomorrow. Perhaps this will lighten the crowd at the station for me.

Big deal. So everyone runs out to fuel up today and the oil companies sell double the amount to make up for what they won't sell tomorrow. Six in one half dozen in the other.

I personally dont think that the whole boycott thing works. Not to mention the fact that, if you listen to the talking heads on CNBC, it has nothing to do with the oil companies OR even the suppliers of the world oil market but rather the irrational behavior of the investors on the futures market. We are starting to see it with grains, rice, etc now too. Because one area of the world is experiencing a shortage (nothing new I would add) of these items, the futures market has begun to run wild (mostly due to the fears on the oil side - and again, irrational behavior) and now there are reports of stores like Costco and Sam's Club RATIONING these items. HELLO!!???!!! We have more of this stuff stored in silos across the nation than we know what to do with, but we are rationing it therefore making prices go up!!!
Anyway, that is why I think that the boycott doesnt work. AND, if you ARE going to boycott a company, just make sure it IS NOT an American company!!!! Boycott one of the many foreign companies who are making tons of money off of our people and not paying any money into taxes or IRA funds, etc......just my opinion.

If we plan to boycott on a particular day - the gas stations may drop the prices for that day only. Could you afford to still say NO? I'm really glad my 1999 minivan takes E-85. MPG doesn't seem to change that much when I use it vs regular gas.

the problem is the gas company knows that they have us by the short hairs. Many people have to drive just to get to work and many people are working poor. With gas at its current level and most cars getting around 20 MPG some people are driving around 60 miles round trip if you are working for around 10 or 11 an hr you are using 1 hr of work a day to get back and forth to work this is 5 hrs out of 40 for your weekly paycheck and I know people that actually have a farther commute each day for less than 10 per hr and they are spend 25 to 30% each and every paycheck and can not afford to change things. Yes boycotting gas stations sounds like a great Idea but it does not work. the only thing that would work is for all those that are capable of it parking there cars for a long period of time till the gas prices fall granted this is not something that all people can do but the only way to get there attention is for everyone to park for 30 to 90 days and you will see the gas prices drop and then the few that have to drive because of no other means well that would only be a small percentage

Boomer, 1 US gallon = 3.78 litres, not 4.77 litres. Your equivalent price is around $5.00 per gallon.
By "boycotting" only certain brands for short periods, you only spread your money around. No one loses. Besides, do you REALLY know where your gas comes from?

Well not Alarm Anyone. In Canada we are paying almost 6 to 7 dollars a gallon rate now. Do the math 4.7 litres of gas = 1 US Gallon. We are paying $1.18 to 1.44 a litre here. Big oil is fixxing prices to see what people will pay. They see Canada paying it now your next. Filling my grand am over here is now a 65 dollar a week thing just to goto work. Now if want to go other places its going to cost more than that 65 dollars. Your not alone we are going broke too just like you guys. What do you do? how do you stop it? I dunno. We all must enjoy getting ripped off everyday by BIG IOL.

I think we should boycot ESSO and Petro canada for the monthS of May And June. Hit big Oil in the pocket book and let them sit on there overpriced Fuel. Remember they own the stations and they have two sets of Books. One for the stations and the other for big Oil. What was the profits last Quarter for big Oil????? $$$$$$$$$$$$.... Not kidding pass the word boycot Esso and Petro Canada for the month of May and June from coast to coast. I bet the price will come down by July if we boycot them. For those of you in the states our Esso is your Exxon.

Any boycott is pointless UNLESS people actually use a lot less gas over an extended period of time.
