EPA hints at major auto industry probe of mileage claims

GasBuddy Blog -- When we reported Wednesday that Hyundai and Kia had misrepresented mileage claims on multiple vehicles, we couldn't help but wonder how they were able to put false numbers on sticker prices that are supposedly reviewed and approved by the EPA.

Are those numbers valid? That’s the question motorists – and regulators – are left wondering in the wake of the revelation, last week, that Hyundai and Kia had inflated their own mileage figures by as much as 6 mpg on 13 separate models. The Environmental Protection Agency is apparently getting ready to review other makers’ mileage claims, the Detroit Bureau reports.

Meanwhile, even numbers that meet government scrutiny are coming under question because of the way the auto industry...

They fell down on it. I don't wanna see them adding more requirements or intervention... but rather just get back to doing what they were supposed to in the first place.

Why not just let the markets rule? If one or more manufacturers is posting inaccurate numbers and consumers learn it, consumers stop buying their cars. They lose business and go to bed hungry. Why do we need government to say "You did wrong! Now we're going to give you a bunch of chances to do right." Market economics will eventually always dictate the ultimate pass or fail marks for any company. Regulation is an unnecessary expense and perhaps unlimited opportunities for forgiveness for companies. All manufacturers need to do is to build a better mousetrap. Nothing more.

This is another way for the government to raise revenue (that will be passed on to the consumer) without calling it a tax.

Better in warmer weather, less in cold. Very happy with it.
