The crazy thing about all this is that we are only making the refineries we have bigger as their are to many idiotic rules to build a new refinery in America. Instead you have places like Brazil and India coming on line with refineries that run 2.5 million barrels a day. They emit there emissions to the same sky we do but in America we are held to a much higher degree. The competitive advatage is to build overseas. Oh and the Dept of Energy was created when they were developing the Atomic Bomb and it was to monitor and control Nuclear material but of course the goverment spun it into a whole different deal in the 70's under Carter.

Why the HE## do you keep saying that the problems stem from the last four years?! The energy and oil crisis problems were created LONG before the last four years!

"Hopefully the folks in charge will learn from the mistakes of the past four years and let the energy industry’s success take root with the ebb and flow of free markets"
Most of the folks that voted last month sure didn't learn anything, why would the next 4 years be any different?
4 years ago Obama said he wanted to lower the deficit, but he just about doubled it. This time he says he wants to lower it, but is demanding the debt ceiling be raised so he can borrow more, and crying that the Republicans won't let him. I didn't vote for this incompetent Socialist.

Well done commentary. The USA Today is no different than the rest of the left-wing liberal media that helped get our nation's worst nightmare re-elected. They dig for the negatives in a very positive situation and then turn around and cover up our president and his cronies helping to get people killed in our embassy. This is the 21st century and our nation needs this energy boom and every drop of oil and cubic foot of natural gas it can get, right here on our soil.

The Obama Administration and the Dept of Energy (Steven Chu) both are working towards independence from fossil fuels. While I applaud their efforts (except where they threw money at Bankrupt prone companies) they have to realize that their efforts will not be realized overnight, and may take many years to implement. And while this is happening, shutting down fossil fuel venues will only hurt this country

With US production at an all time high, why can't these major oil companies give us a break in the prices of gasoline.

@divebomber - great comment! With EVERY boom comes a bust. The classic all your eggs in one basket.
I know this is an opinion piece and it makes several good points, but the main reason for this oil and gas boom is THE CURRENT HIGH PRICES! That and the enhanced technology that allows more of the product to be extracted from the earth.
Remember folks, that our oil and gas prices are greatly dependent on GLOBAL demand and deregulation (e.g. more give-aways to the oil and financial industries, mostly off-shore). The refiners will manipulate supplies and export excess product to keep prices high, unless we re-regulate the greedy turkeys.

Why are prices so high despite increased domestic production? Take a look back at Germany in the 1920s, where it took a wheelbarrow full of currency to buy a loaf of bread.
High prices are because of the inflated dollar. It takes more Bernanke bucks to buy a gallon of gas.
