This is what happens when there is so much media coverage about a situation. Now every driver error with a Toyota will get blamed on the car - continuing to add to the bad press for Toyota. However, as these stories get discredited, it will not help those who have had legitimate problems with their Toyotas - it will only muddy the waters for everyone.

Toyota is starting to fight back. Today, they cast doubt on the story of that guy - remember the guy last week that said his Prius accelerated out of control on the freeway? They said they found significant inconsistencies in his story. And let me tell you something, that's embarrassing when a car dealer calls you a liar.

This is not "bad press" for Toyota. It looks like good press to
me.

Let's see... if the driver stomped on the gas instead of the brake, maybe that might explain things.

Toyota had better find out what is happening as this continued bad press will hurt sales for a long time to come.

Who would have ever thunk a Prius could go that fast.
I feel better/safer driving my F350 with all the Toyotas flying down the highway and add to the fact some Hondas cannot stop. Yikes!

Yeah, maybe no brakes applied, but sales for all these car companies has been seeing nothing but brakes. Well of course not FORD sales, They've got the pedal down baby. Figured Out Restructuring Disaster fast and better they them all. No brake for Ford, all pedal to the metal.

SURPRISE! SURPRISE! The media have created a great deal more fear and anxiety for Toyota owners than those Toyota owners need or deserve. We are in an era when the media is rapidly discrediting itself.

I've owned my 2005 Prius for 5 years, with no problems, so this story does not surprise me. I would buy one again.

NPR had a story on the black boxes in Toyotas, which were introduced about a decade ago as a test mechanism to gather data to improve safety. They apparently are not easy to read, and Toyota may make them easier to decode in the future. That makes me wonder how many American cars have similar black box devices to capture accident details (if any), and how hard it is to read the data on them.

Driver mistake...not a surprise, I am sure it is the case in 90% of Toyota's problem.
For the other 10%, it might be problem on the car, nothing is perfect.... but it is in the average of other cars anyway.

At least this woman in Harrison, New York appears to just have had an accident, and was not doing a publicity stunt so she could hire some slip and fall lawyers.

Has this been checked by a technician ? has it had a diagnostic check ?
Even if this was driver error, there have been enough issues to require the recall.

The article yesterday stated that the "black box" didn't record any data before airbag deployment. Which is it? Data before the crash or no data before the crash.

thought I smelled (another) rat.... Does anyone know how to spell DRIVER ERROR? Yeah, go ahead and blame Toyota, or whichever manufacturer is the lawsuit of the day, and hire a lawyer first and then sit back to collect. Hah, hah, hah, hah, hah.....

I thought so. Good comments so far.

I almost (!) feel sorry for Toyota. How do you fix a phantom problem?

Come up with a phantom (but cheap to resolve) fix, like changing the floor mats.

However, I like my 2006 Prius. I average 50+ MPG. There is plenty of room. My main complaints are:

#1) The seats are designed for someone with an average to short back. And there is no way to adjust the seat height.

The other issues appear to be fixed in the 2010 model.

Slip and fall lawyers in Harrison, New York must have been drooling over this case until it became apparent that driver error is the reason for this accident.

So when and if you are in an accident, ALWAYS have your car towed to your home. Then make the police or whomever get a warrant for the "black box" or data recorder. Protect yourself.

Some people nowadays do not take the blame for their own actions but blame someone else, namely Toyota.

DEG you did not know that the computer in your car keeps a record just like a "black box" in a commercial airliner. Just shorter I think it retains the last 30 seconds.

Toyota probably has a problem. However, much of what we are seeing is simply pile it higher BS from the US media.

The feel and resistance of a brake pedal would be rather easy to discern from the further travel and less resistance of an accelerator. Sorry to hear of any accident that could be avoided; but the electronic gremlins lurking in the attorneys' discovery could change our opinion of this event.

This reminds me of what happened years ago with Audis and sudden acceleration problems.

I don't dispute that there us a problem with some of the Toyota product that is out there, but I don't believer that the numbers are truly as high as they are (real cases). In order to cover any and all potential problem vehicles, especially with a problem like this that appears to be intermittent and with as yet no proven cause, a responsible manufacturer would recall all potentially problematic vehicle.
