Virginia Tries to Circumvent Obama on Drilling

NY Times -- WASHINGTON — When Doug Domenech looks out at the Atlantic Ocean, he sees oil and natural gas and jobs and revenue. Standing between him and those prizes are President Obama, the Navy and whales.

Mr. Domenech, Virginia’s secretary of natural resources, is undeterred. He and the state’s Republican governor, Bob McDonnell, have teamed up with Virginia’s two Democratic senators to try to do an end run around the president and put Virginia’s coast on the energy map through an act of Congress.

The state is trying to restore a lease sale for energy exploration that was canceled in 2010 after the BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. Its efforts have made Virginia the new epicenter of a campaign by energy companies to gain a toehold in the potentially vast resources hidden beneath the Atlantic.

Whats going on in Virginia is the real America. Not the ugly vision of America Obama offers. Kudos to them.

Down with the ugly Euro-weenie loving model Obama presents. Virginia leads the way back to our roots. This is how things are done. How soon can I move there?

Let's see, BP was involved in the Exxon Valdez mess (could have been almost avoided if BP hadn't lied about what it had available on hand in Valdez). It was involved in the Macondo well blow out (i.e. "Deep Water Horizon") and in the bad fuel. For the latter, it will pay about $12 million, for the former it will pay $4.5 billion in addition to money already paid. And possibly more. I don't remember what the cost of the Valdez situation was for BP.

So... does VA really want to be doing clean up for the next 20 years? Isaac sent oiled bird on shore--2 1/2 years after the Macondo well blew and there was no visible surface oil left.

It is both prudent and in the long term national interest to determine what potential oil and natural gas reserves are available along the US Atlantic coast. In this policy battle, one certainly hopes that Virginia wins both for the sake of current and potential employees in that state and for possible enhancement in the US strategic position relative to our need for crude oil and natural gas for the foreseeable future.

Got to be extremely careful working in such a dangerous environment. An oil spill there could be picked up by the Gulf Stream and carried north and east across major fishing areas and conceivably all the way to Britain and Ireland. A daunting prospect.

"OGW": I just showed my approval of your comment on the last article. On this article...well considering where you are from...I will just hold my peace and not say anything now.

But I am really happy to see how the republican Governor and secretary of Natural Resources have figured how to join up with their democrat Senators to win this battle. Go for it, Mr. Domenech.

Since none of you have any experience with exploration with a geological feature similar to this google Exxon Destin Dome oil exploration. That will tell you why the last time these tracks were offered in the Reagan Adm the tracks drew no bids. This is the same sort of structure as Destin Dome and I don't see any one working offshore US clamoring for this sale.

Is any one here smart enough to know what I am talking about?

The Infamous Failure

Destin Dome emitted a different kind of siren's song in the early days of Gulf exploration, when industry was looking at shallower potential prior to the big Norphlet play activity that began close to shore and eventually migrated offshore to the structure.

"There was a big lease sale in the early '70s," said Layton Steward, "and everybody was bidding on it."

Steward, an AAPG member, now retired from the helm of LL&E, was offshore manager for Shell at the time. The objectives then were primarily for Cretaceous reservoirs, said consulting geophysicist Mike Forrest, another Shell hand during that period.

The sale occurred about six years after Shell developed bright spot technology, according to Steward, who noted the bright spot concept originated with Forrest (May 2000 EXPLORER).

"We couldn't see any bright spots, so we used the technology in reverse to modify our bids," Steward said, "and bid only on one tract mainly to be sure we were represented on it."

He noted that natural gas wasn't worth much then, so Shell went after a tract downdip from the crest hoping to find an oil leg instead of gas.

"This was a huge-but-late structure geologically, and it had us worried a bit relative to the migration and entrapment of hydrocarbons on it," Steward said.

"Exxon and Champlin pretty much bought the whole thing," he added, "and a bunch of the Champlin guys, including the senior-most executives, were fired because they so overbid the sale.

"They may have just assumed it was a big ol' anticline full of hydrocarbons."

The dome lies 25 miles south of Pensacola, Fla. The large, west-northwest trending anticlinal feature is more than 50 miles long and 20 miles wide and with a relief of 3,000 feet on Lower Cretaceous rocks.

It apparently is the result of a salt swell that was uplifted during the Late Cretaceous and early Cenozoic, according to an article in the AAPG BULLETIN (1997: Ball, Martin and Taylor). From the American Association of Petroleum Geologists. Bulletin

These people seem to think natural resources are just a windfall to be had for the taking. This view of the world is 18th century and will get you into a lot of pollution and corruption you never thought possible.
